Last Friday night I rented Twilight and made Ty watch it with me. He actually liked it! Gasp!
It made me want to reread all the books. We went to Borders on Saturday night and I was going to buy the first book. (I borrowed the 1st one from a friend.) But they only had it in hardback. I don't like hardback books. They aren't as easy to tote around in my purse. They don't bend very easily. And I hate the sleeve. I always take them off while I am reading the book. I know you guys are thinking, "Why don't you just buy the book at Wal-Mart?" Well, Wal-Mart is only selling the book in the small paperback size with a scene from the movie on the front. Its ugly and I don't like the small size. I'm just a little particular! Most people I know like hard back books better. Am I the only weird one out there that prefers paperback??
Now to the reason for this post: QUICHE LORRAINE
I had never made a quiche before. I read several recipes online and combined a lot of them to come up with this. I thought it was delish! Although next time I think I will try to make my own pie crust or buy a different brand. I think I bought Great Value--It was my only option at Wal-Mart.
INGREDIENTS:
1 recipe pastry for a 9 inch single crust pie
6 slices bacon {I used turkey bacon and I umped it to 8 slices.}
1 onion, sliced {completely optional in my opinion}
3 eggs, beaten
1 1/3 cups milk
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 recipe pastry for a 9 inch single crust pie
6 slices bacon {I used turkey bacon and I umped it to 8 slices.}
1 onion, sliced {completely optional in my opinion}
3 eggs, beaten
1 1/3 cups milk
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
{I happened to have some fresh spinach leaves in the fridge that was about to go bad, so I threw some of it in as well.}
1 1/2 cups shredded Swiss cheese
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C). Line pastry shell with foil. Bake in oven for 8 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 5 minutes, or until crust is set and dry. Remove from oven and turn down temperature to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C).
In a large skillet, cook bacon until crisp. Drain and reserve 2 tablespoons of drippings. Crumble the bacon and set aside. Cook onion in skillet with reserved drippings; cook until onion is tender and then drain.
In a large bowl, mix together milk, salt, cayenne pepper, nutmeg and eggs. Stir in bacon, spinach and onion. In a separate bowl, toss cheese and flour together, then add to egg mixture. Be sure to mix well. Pour egg mixture into pie crust. {When I poured the egg mixture into the pie crust I got worried it would boil over so I put it on a baking sheet before putting it in the oven.}
Bake in preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes, or until knife inserted in center of quiche comes out clean. I would recommend covering the edge of crust with foil while baking to prevent burning or overbrowning. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.
We ate it for leftovers the next night and it was just as good! And we aren't big leftovers fans.
Enjoy!
Thanks for the recipe! I understand your book dilemma. I know we aren't supposed to judge a book by the cover, but it really makes a difference. Have you tried Target for the Twilight books?
ReplyDeleteBorder's has the books in plain paperback! You should be able to find what you're looking for there. And how did you get your hubs to watch it?! LoL I raved all about it to L and he thinks its a "chick flick". I'll get him to watch it eventually, and I think he'll be pleasantly suprised :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting the Quiche recipe too :)
I love quiche....my mom makes it once a year for xmas breakfast, which isn't near enough...I think I will make this one night! yum
ReplyDeleteI love Quiche! My eldest and I make it at least once a week-what a great new recipe to try.
ReplyDeleteAs for "Twilight", the books were just fine, but the movie? I was so embarrassed that I asked my husband to watch it with me. I think I'm just one of those "Dont try to take a book and make it into a movie" girls. They never seem to translate well.
But I'm glad you all enjoyed it-and your yummy quiche. Love the orange damask plate!
YUM! That looks delicious! I also prefer paperbook! Your not crazy!
ReplyDeleteI made D watch Twilight with me too. :) He liked it. Your quiche looks great! Was it as good as Orr's?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the recipe! I had too much pie dough left over after Easter so I made a second chocolate pie and now I know what I'm going to do with the last pie crust I have left!
ReplyDeleteI loooove quiche! One of my faves, and have actually never thought to make it!! This is on my to-make list :)

Check Amazon for the book. I made Dustin watch the movie with me too and he also loved it. I as pleasantly surprised! Of course, I knew I would love it!

ReplyDeleteYummy!! Thanks for the recipe.
ReplyDeleteI don't like hardback books either :)
I love quiche so much and its better the second time around. I am the same way with books I really don't like hardback either good luck on your search.
ReplyDeleteOoooohhh that looks delish!! I definitely need to try that!
ReplyDeleteGreat job on the quiche!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds delicious! Paperbacks are easy to carry, but hardbacks are nice for collector's books.
ReplyDeleteI Love twilight:) I became obsessed with the books.. read all four in about 6 or 7 days.. My husband was soo sick and tired of me reading:)ha!
ReplyDeleteI am going to have to make this quiche.. actually I have never made a quiche.. so when I do.. it should be interesting:)
How yumm!! I love quiche! And I'm dying over your plate! I tried to get them at PB before they sold out but no such luck :(
ReplyDeleteYum! I love quiche. This one looks delicious!
ReplyDeleteYour quiche looks amazing! Remember in 16 Candles when Long Duck Dong asks how you spell it and Grandpa tells him, "you don't spell it, you eat it!" I don't know why I felt the need to remind you of that, ha! And as for the books - I won't ever buy the copies with movie scenes on them either, ha!
ReplyDeleteOmg I LOVE quiche lorraine!!! (Surprised??)
ReplyDeleteIn Paris I actually made one with my roommate in our adorable lil kitchen. I DONT COOK IN AMERICA!
Ha! But I did there. Thanks for the flashback. And please continue cooking up a storm for those of us who can't!!
Yum, this looks really good.
ReplyDeleteYummm... your quiche looks so good. My mouth is watering.
ReplyDeleteI tagged you on my blog. :)
Ooh, the quiche looks delicious!
ReplyDeleteI prefer paperbacks too... you just can't read a hardback comfortably, especially in bed or in the bath!

OH.MY.GOSH! This looks sooooo good. I love quiche! I shall try this. I hear we may get to meet too, yay!!
ReplyDeleteI like paperback books better too for the same reason - they travel better in the purse! I've seen the real paperback book at Target a lot - maybe you can try that.
ReplyDeleteRecipe sounds great - I'll have to try that!
Your quiche looks delish! I made one a few months ago and today at the grocery store I picked up ingredients for another. I love how quick and easy they are!
