Really?!

Let me set the scene for this story.
I'm in Ulta. It's a pretty big store.
I'm browsing through the nail polishes which are located at the VERY back of the store.
They don't have what I'm looking for, the fall Essie color cube.
I walk to the front of the store to see if they have any in the back.

The story:
On my walk to the front of the store I encounter a little girl.
LG: Do you love Jesus?
Me: Yes, do you love Jesus.
LG: Yes.

I continue my walk to the registers. There is a line, so I wait to ask my question*.
Little girl follows me.
LG: Have you ever dyed your hair?
Me: Yes.
LG: I want to dye my hair. The girls at school tell me I have ugly hair.
Me: You don't have ugly hair. It is very pretty and so many people would love to have your pretty blonde hair.
What grade are you in?
LG: Kindergarten.
Me: Well, your hair is very pretty and I don't think you should dye it.

Finally, a free sales associate and I proceed to ask my question. They don't have the cube, so I walk to the VERY back of the store to look over my selections. Little girl follows me.

I don't turn around, because I don't want to encourage her. We get to the nail polish and she talks and talks.

Me: Where is your mom?
LG: checking out.
Me: Don't you think she will be worried? You should probably go back up there. I will walk you to the front.

She doesn't think so and continues chatting. Eventually, her mom walks to the VERY back of the store and asks me if her daughter has been talking my ear off. She is very calm. I laugh, a har dee har har, yes she has been talking my ear off and why aren't you more concerned type laugh, and they leave.

UM, does anyone else see the problem with this??? Since when is it okay to let your kindergartner wander around a store by themselves? The mom wasn't able to see her daughter until she got to the VERY back of the store, not only because she is, well a kindergartner and short, but because of the store set up. She also didn't seem the least bit concerned. I think I would have been freaking out!

I felt weird posting her picture, but couldn't resist documenting this weird encounter, so you get the mustache.
*Why can I never find sales people when I actually need them?

  1. Yes!!!! It drives me insane. Especially, when in parking lots...children are running around without holding a adults hand!? I've thanked someone on Black Friday before, because I saw all these crazy shoppers letting there kid run in front of them. Drives me nuts...and yes, why are no associates on hand when you need them!? I've pondered that as well. Sorry for the long comment! Ha!

  2. Unsupervised Children are one of my biggest pet peeves and I hope to remember that when I become a parent!!! Also, perhaps I will tell my future offspring not only "Don't Talk to Strangers" but also "Don't Annoy Strangers!"

  3. Haha! That's hilarious! Did the little girl ask you why you were taking her picture too? If I was that mom I would be mortified...such lazy parenting!

  4. I hate it when random kids wander around stores like that! I swear, this is why I always say you should have to pass a test to be a parent. And wasn't that lady afraid someone might take her kid or that she might leave the store?

  5. Gosh!! I remember wandering around stores when I was a kid, but, I mean, it was like two rows over from my mom--she was always in earshot and could usually always see me. I would be super nervous as a parent! I hope you at least were able to get some fun nail polish even if it wasn't the Essie fall line!

  6. Ummm, I would have been a panicking, Mom!!! This is crazy!!

  7. That is awful! Some people just don't understand that it takes only a second for someone to snatch your child not to mention that some people don't want to be bothered!

Thanks for the info on the Sally mani polish, I'm going to give it another try bc they do have great colors, like Commander in Chic!

  8. I don't know...I don't think it was THAT big of a deal. I used to wander around stores all the time. I remember my mom would leave me in the books section while she shopped around Target...I mean, yes it could be dangerous but you also don't want to be one of those anal parents that still has the umbilical cord attached. You were at ULTA...I doubt any scary molester men would be there and if you teach your child (like you're supposed to) about how to yell and scream if a stranger tries to touch you, etcera...ehh...I guess I'm just more laid back...maybe its in the Cali girl in me? : P

ALTHOUGH--I think all kids are annoying. Except mine...mine will be perfect, right? : P

  9. OMG I love that you posted the picture! Hilarious!!!

I'm not a huge kid fan. Especially talking ones. You were so patient! But yeah, I think it's strange she wasn't within seeing distance of her mom.

Looks like she has on a school uniform? Maybe they aren't aware there are scary people out there?!

  10. ...still laughing you had enough time to pull out the phone and take the pic!! and the girl didn't flinch!

  11. The mustache is a lovely touch. My favorite part of the story - "Does your mom know where you are? (Does your mom know that you are annoying innocent bystanders?)"

  12. That is really funny. I probably would be worried to let my child wander around the store, but more than that, I think it's rude to assume someone else wants to entertain them!

  13. No. I can't believe a Mom would do such a thing. But I do love that you took her picture. Hilarious!!

  14. I am certain that if my son wanders around Ulta looking at nail polish my problems are bigger than his evident "boundary Issues".

However, my son won't ever get out of my eyesight mainly because once he is OUT of my line of vision, the ability to stop in cold in his tracks all from me giving him my "don't.you.dare" look will be lost. That, or the harness he will be attached to. Either one.

Come to think of it, you could have told her that "Jesus doesn't like girls who paint their fingers and look like a harlot" and that would have shaken her. But, she was in kindergarten..... so maybe something to keep in your back pocket for later.

  16. That is so SO weird! I hate when people let their kids (no matter the age, before age 13) walk a round and possibly get abducted!! You did exactly what I probably would have done!

  17. That's weird. I mean, my mom let me walk around the store by myself, but not very far or for THAT long! Checking out that long would be way too much time. She would let me go to the toy section of the grocery section for a little bit while she shopped, but that's it. And I don't think she would in this day and age--things are too different today!

Totally love that you took a pic though. And I don't know what those kids were thinking--her hair is beautiful. :)

  18. I love kids, so she wouldn't have gotten on my nerves, but I can't believe a mom would let a 5 year old wander off like that. Just because it's Sephora doesn't mean someone wouldn't pick her up-not all child abductors are "scary molester men."

On another note, it makes me horribly sad that little girl would be so insecure about her looks at such a young age. =(

  19. yes! that is very weird!! We had a little girl that used to live two doors down. She was 4 and other then a passing hello I never talked to her, and never even said more then that to her parents (who were nut jobs). One night around 8pm, our door bell rang, my husband opened it and the little girl was standing there alone and she said "nevermind", he was like "nevermind??". He came in and told me this and I was like where were her parents?!? It's dark out! So many kids in our neighbors wander around on their bikes, not looking where they are going and every time one of them darts into the road, I look for an adult and NEVER see one. It amazes me. What if we would have been creepers and she came to our door? I dont have kids but I know better then to let my child that's 5 and under wander.

  20. That's awful! It's pretty scary and annoying how long that poor girl was on her own wandering around :( You are much more patient than I am!

  21. Alyssa always holds my hand everytime we go out, even in shopping centres. My mum tells me I'm too strict and to stop wrapping my children in cotton wool, they are not learning what life is all about....sorry but my children learn my life not the life of a child mollester or a murderer...

  22. I can't believe that! It would have been so easy for someone with not so nice intentions to snatch her up!

  23. Wow...I would have been freaking out if I were her mom. That's crazy!

  24. Sad and scary.
They should hire this little girl as a sales person or at least a PR gal!
Good thing it was you talking to her, and not someone else.
    Hugs,

  25. I don't do well with unsupervised children. Or children talking my ear off. And I can't understand how that mom was not concerned. Is she aware of the world we live in?!?

    ReplyDelete
  26. I can't believe the mom just let her kid be by herself. What is wrong with her?

    ReplyDelete
  27. WOW!!! Some parents are just so unbelievably "hands off!" Seriously, a little healthy paranoia never hurt anybody!

You're too cute and funny by the way. Enjoyed looking through some of your posts! :)
