The Curious Sofa

My boss and I are travelling for work today. We always make a fun stop or two along the way to our destination. Today was no exception. She came across this blog called The Curious Sofa and fell in love with the pictures of their store. So when we knew we were going to be in the area we had to stop by. It was the most romantically decorated store ever. I just loved everything in it. I would love to have a romantically decorated room in my house one day. Its not quite Ty's style so it will take a lot of convincing.
As soon as we pulled up I fell in love with the front doors! I love that grey/blue color. I'm hoping to acheive a similar shade of that in my bedroom. It will probably be a little more grey than that.

Even the bathroom was nicely decorated!

Last night we were in Lawrence, KS. This was my second trip to Lawrence. It is a really neat college town. They have a great downtown area with fun shops and good restaurants. I love college town atmospheres. My boss and I always have a good time when we travel. And the trip was successful jobwise as well. Now I'm ready to get home and see Ty and Nuts.

Cuppies and Joe

A couple of weeks ago I was out travelling for work and was going to be passing through the city where one of my good friends live. I called Joy up and made plans. I got to see her new house and then we went to this great coffee shop near her house. I had read about this place on someone else's blog and really wanted to check it out. I love cupcake places. And Joy loves coffee shops so it was the perfect combination for us. Cuppies and Joe is located in an old house that has been renovated into a coffee shop. Every room was painted a different color and had eclectic curtains in the window. It was a very cozy atmosphere. It wasn't as cutesy as I expect cupcake places to be either. I love cutesy little places. This place had a different, but good vibe. I wish I would have taken pictures of the inside, but the place was pretty packed and I didn't want people to think I was snapping pics of them. Joy and I ended up sitting outside because it was a nice day.
It was so nice to catch up with Joy. She is one of the sweetest, nicest people I know.
I had my first frozen hot chocolate. It was very yummy!

Running Club

I had no idea there was a such thing as a running club until the other day. Chesley and her roommate were leaving their school's gym last Tuesday and ran into this guy who told them about it. They could see the running club taking place as they walked into the gym. Chesley decided that she wanted to go back the next week. I thought it sounded like it could be fun so I decided to go. Monday night I went to Target and bought a cheap digital watch. A watch is necessary for the running club, because everything is done based on times and keeping your pace.
So, tonight at 6 pm Chesley, two of her friends from her masters program, and I showed up at the outdoor track at their school. There were 50ish plus people there. The four of us had never been to anything like this before. We did some group stretching and then they divided us up into groups. 1 through 6. 6 being the slowest group. The 4 of us put ourselves in the 6th group.
I guess every week they have a different running workout for you to do. We ran (8) 400's. (A 400 equals a lap around the track.) After each 400 you walked half a lap. All the other groups had to run 12 laps, but since group 6 mostly consisted of beginners we only did 8 which is 2 miles. They also set a pace for you. So group 6 was at around a 9 minute mile pace.
As they are giving us our instructions I am thinking to myself that I won't be able to finish 8 laps but thats okay, I will just do as much as I can. I ran cross country and track in high school. I knew I wasn't in that kind of shape so I was just happy that I showed up for this. I workout on average twice a week. I do some Turbo Jam videos and walk/run on my treadmill while watching tv. I only run during commercials. So I was pretty sure that I would not be able to run 8 laps.
Well I did it!! I ran all 8 laps!!! This is a huge deal for me. I haven't ran that much in so long. And more importantly I haven't enjoyed it like that since high school. Every once in a while I catch myself missing workouts with a team, being in shape, and that feeling of accomplishment after a great workout. (You don't get that feeling when you only run during commerical breaks!)
I called my dad afterward to tell him what I had just done. My pace for the 400 was 2:10 - 2:15. He just laughed at those times, because I was running the 800 below that in hs. I wish he lived near me because he would love participating in something like this. There were people much older than him out there.
I can't wait until next week! Its so nice to go with friends. Even though none of us run at the same pace it is still nice to go and know people. I am going to have to go shoe shopping this weekend. I am running in the same pair I wore my senior year of high school (I've been out of HS for 7 years). I'm just really picky about my running shoes and it takes me forever to break them in. I know they have way too many miles on them, but they are just so comfy. I guess its time to trade them in...

At the Taco, Taco Cabana...

I left work a few minutes early on Friday so that Ty and I could go to a nursery to look for trees. We ended up with a new evergreen for the front flowerbed and a small red leafed tree for the backyard. We also learned why we killed a few bushes and the original evergreen. Apparently we had put way too much fertilizer in with the plant. We were putting more than a few sprinkles in the actual hole that we had dug. This is a no no. We had know idea! The lady said that it should be equivalent to sprinkling pepper onto a cooked egg. And that it should only go on top of the dirt once you have planted the plant, tree, etc. Now we know.
After finding the trees and planting them we headed to Taco Cabana for dinner. We get there, order our food and then find out from some very angry customers that they had been there for an hour before they go their food. We were there for about an hour total with the wait and actually eating. This is a long time for a fast food place. Luckily, we were distracted from the long wait by chips and salsa and a live musician. That's right, I said a live musician at TACO CABANA! He was hiliarious. He walked around the restaurant with his guitar singing and talking to people. He started introducing people to other people that were sitting across the restaurant from each other. It turned out to be a very friendly atmosphere in the midst of impatience and anger over long waits. Jim, the musician, kept coming back to our table and chatting with us. He discovered that Ty was in medical school. We later heard him telling people that Ty was a physician, a healer. It was just so funny. He also had kids come up and sing the ABC's and You are My Sunshine. It was adorable and the whole restaurant would start clapping after they were finished.
It was such an unexpected experience. Who would have thought live music at the Taco Cabana??

Warning!

You may remember this post, where I showed you the ring that Ty bought me for Valentine's Day. Well, I absolutely loved the ring and had been eyeing it since it came out. I was so excited that he bought it for me. The excitement soon wore off on Sunday after I had worn it to church and noticed that my finger was starting to turn green.

I decided to take it back to Banana Republic. They refused to return the ring becuase they do not accept returns on worn merchandise. What a horrible policy! I had only worn the ring for a few hours and it turned my finger green. Its not like I had worn the ring for weeks and then tried to return it. The lady explained to me that it was costume jewlery. REALLY, I thought it was real gold! I knew it was costume jewelry and would not last forever but even Claire's jewelry doesn't turn your finger green after a couple of hours. Banana's jewelry is slightly more expensive! I expected more from them. They always have great customer service and I was extremely disappointed.

The sales lady told me that I could put clear fingernail polish on the inside to prevent it from turning my finger green. After I got back home and settled down from being angry I decided to paint the inside of my ring. It lasted a few days. Then I noticed that gold around the braids was turning to brass. I became even more disappointed. I was even taking the ring off when I washed my hands to delay this process. I hadn't even worn the ring a week yet. I am refusing to buy anything from BR right now because I am angry with them. I'm sure the strike won't last long as they are one of my favorite stores. But I will never purchase jewelry from them again!

I did do some retail therapy to make up for the ring. I can't wait to get it in the mail.

photo from j.crew.com

I ordered it in navy, which is becoming one of my favorite colors to wear. I put this picture of the top in orange on here because it really shows all the details.

Weekend Recap:
I spent Saturday at work for an Admitted Student Day event that I planned. I enjoy the event planning and this is such a fun event. The admitted students are so excited and just can't wait to start in the Fall. This morning was spent at church. We have started attending the early service. It is so nice to be out of church and home by 10:30 am. It really gives you the whole afternoon to relax. Chesley and I spent the afternoon grocery shopping and running errands. Now I am on the couch watching the Oscar's and trying to work up the energy to work out. I'm not looking forward to tomorrow. I will be at 2 different undergraduate universities and probably won't get home until after 10 pm. Then I will be travelling with my boss on Thursday and Friday. (Although this will be a fun trip, it makes for a busy week.)

p.s. Ignore all the weird spacings in this post. I had it all pretty with bullet points and the blogger decided that it was the boss not me and messed everything up. I could never get it to back to the way it was. :(
p.p.s. Barefoot in Park held the book swap that I participated in and this is the way she set up the swap. People just kept listing books all weekend. It worked out really well.

Randomness and the Swap

A couple of random thoughts:

1. I have a google analytics account for my blog and for our future students site at work. Since I do the recruiting I wanted an idea of how many people were visiting our school site and where they were from. I just check my account for the first time in a couple of months. Over the last month my blog has received 300 more hits than our school's site. I don't know if I should be excited about this or worried that maybe I need to be doing a better job of promoting the school's site. haha!

2. I love fabric shopping. I ran over to Hancock's Fabric tonight to pick up some gender neutral fabric for a custom onesie order. (I still need to sew around everything but you get the idea.) Here are the results:

3. Don't forget to sign up for my cook book swap. You can leave a comment here or e-mail me at sweetsimplicityblog(at)gmail.com if you would like to participate.

4. I spent almost all evening a couple of nights ago trying to figure out how to make a link for the cook book swap and how to show the code so that you could copy and paste it on to your blog via the html gadget. I will have to do a tutorial on how to do it soon.

5. Dear girl who was putting on mascara while driving today,

Shame on you! That is ridiculously unsafe and it meant that I had to frantically try to get someone to let me over from the on ramp because you were not paying attention and wouldn't let me over.

The way that I have to get on the expressway in the morning is kinda chaotic. There is an on ramp from my main street and immediately after that there is an on and off ramp for a major interstate. I couldn't believe this girl thought it was ok to put on her mascara while in morning traffic!

COOK BOOK SWAP

I participated in a book swap a couple of weeks ago and got 2 great books. I love getting things in the mail so I was very excited about it! Then I got to thinking why not do a book swap with cook books?? I'm always looking for new recipes.
Here are the logisitics:
1. Leave a comment or e-mail me with the cook book you would like to swap.
sweetsimplicityblog(at)gmail.com
2. I will post the cook books and their owners in a post on Friday.
3. If you see a cook book that you would like to swap for simply visit that person's blog and leave them a comment with your e-mail. Then you can both decide if you want to swap with each other and then exchange addresses.
4. Once your cook book has been claimed please let me know by commenting on my blog or by e-mailing me. This way I can cross it off the list of available cook books.

5. I will post all of the cook books available for swapping on Friday. It will be first come first serve...

6. If you do not have a blog and would like to participate just leave a comment with your e-mail address and the cook book you are willing to swap. Then whoever wants your cookbook can just e-mail you.

When you go to the post office to mail your cook book ask to mail it through media mail. It is cheaper than mailing it through regular mail. Let me know if you have any questions!

Don't forget to check back to see if there is cook book that you want to swap for! You can also add my cook book swap button to your blog. Grab the link from the right hand column.

Shopaholic

My name is Lindsey and I am a shopaholic! haha! Chesley and I went to see Confessions of a Shopaholic this past weekend. It was so cute! I have read all of the books by Sophie Kinsella. My sister and I have been trading them for years. She writes great chick lit. I also love Isla Fisher. I think she is adorable. And I have been envious of her hair color ever since she was in Wedding Crashers. So needless to say I was very excited for this movie to come out.

When I dyed my hair red over Christmas Break I sent my hair stylist these two pictures. Since she had dyed my hair a darker brown in August she thought it would best to go with the Julianne Moore red color because it was darker than the Isla color. As my roots are starting to grow out I can't wait to go the Isla red color. I don't know why I have such a fascination with red hair. I just think it is so pretty! Maybe it has something to do with the fact that red heads are usually fair skinned and I am definitely pale!

I found out about the coolest thing today...did you know that you could save your google maps?? You can save them with all kinds of restaurants and shops saved on them with cute little markers. I never knew you could do that! I started my NYC map today after a coworker showed me her map that she had been putting together for our conference trip. I'm probably the last person to know about this. It is going to make planning vacations so much easier! (I think you have to have a google account to do this.)

Boat Shoes and Rings

Ty and I had a great Valentine's Day. He always gets up early on Saturdays and heads to the school to study. I woke up Saturday morning and walked into the kitchen to find my Valentine's Day card. Then I went to let Nuts out of his cage and there was a box of chocolates and a note from "Nuts". It was so cute! That evening we cooked dinner at home, rented a movie and watched the Slam Dunk Contest. It was a very relaxing evening.
Ty bought me this ring. The ivory and gold look so pretty against my pale skin. :)

My mom bought me some sperry's for Valentine's Day. They are the most comfortable shoes ever!!

Happy Monday!

Sweet Valentines

Yesterday at work we had a staff meeting and during our meeting we made valentines! My office only has one guy working in it. Bless his heart! He is surrounded by girls who had a craft day during our staff meeting. My boss bought a ton of fun stuff from HobLob. I bought some stuff to make valentines with: cardstock paper and dum dum suckers. I saw this on Martha's website.

They were pretty easy to make and would be a fun project with the kiddos. I would have posted them yesterday but my pda did not want to send the pictures through e-mail to my work computer. It was SLOW! The link for the directions is on Martha's website.
Happy Valentine's Day!

Happy Valentine's Day

Happy Valentine's Day! {tomorrow!}
Valentine's Day always makes me think back to past Valentine's Days and how lucky I am to have such a great guy in my life. He always does something special. Last year I wasn't expecting much. I was out of town for a recruiting trip and got back around 6 that evening. Ty had a test that morning so I didn't even think he would plan anything. I came home to the best steak dinner ever and roses. It was so sweet! He had gotten up early that morning and went to the grocery store before his test.

I bought this rawhide bone for Nuts last year for V-day at Target. I didn't see them this year. He might have to settle for a regular rawhide bone this year.

Ty and I always stay in for V-day. It is just too crazy at restaurants on this day. We will be staying in and cooking dinner together. Chesley and I will be celebrating V-day tonight by watching Confessions of a Shopaholic. I can't wait! I have read all of the books probably 3 times each. They are so cute. And I really like Isla Fisher. I wish I had her hair!

{Did anyone notice that it's Friday the 13th???}

I hope everyone has a great weekend! Happy Valentine's Day!

Love is in the Air

I am on the road for work today. I drove to my destination last night and stayed the night. In some ways I don't mind being away from Ty because I don't really see him that much during the weeknights, but in other ways I miss even that hour a night that we get to spend together. I know there are a lot of questionares going around blogger and facebook right now. I thought this one was really cute and wanted to share it with you especially since Valentine's Day is right around the corner.

What are your middle names? Diane and Douglas

How long have you been together? Dating since November 22, 1999. (freshman year of high school; we did break up a few times, but always continued to talk and hang out through it all. I believe those break-ups are the only reason we are still together today. You have to explore other things especially when you find someone as a freshman in high school. But I digress...)
We have been married for 1 1/2 years. 9.5 years total. WOW! Thats almost a decade! I'm getting old!

How long did you know each other before you started dating? Ty started going to my school in the 5th grade. We went out once in the 6th grade. I dreamed of marrying him as a 6th grader!

Who asked who out? He asked me out right before he played in a basketball game.

How old were each of you when you met? We were 5th graders when we met. We started dating when we were 15.

How old are each of you now? both 24.

How tall are each of you?I am 5'2" and Ty is 6'2".

Whose siblings do you see the most? Its probably about equal. Our parents live in the same town and that is when we see everyone.

Do you have any children together? Not yet...

What about pets? NUTS!!

Did you go to the same school? We went to high school together. Then I went to OU my freshman year and he went to OSU. I then transferred to OSU for my sophomore year on.

Are you from the same hometown? Yes.

Who is the smartest? Definitely Ty. I could never survive medical school. Although I like to think I am smarter in some areas. :)

Who is the most sensitive? ME.

Where do you eat out most as a couple? Braum's. :) We love chocolate shakes!

Where is the furthest you two have traveled together as a couple? Las Vegas, last summer.

Who does the cooking? Me.

Who is more social? Maybe me. Its a toss up.

Who is the neat-freak? Neither. He is a little bit cleaner than I am.

Who hogs the bed? Nuts! haha! Neither of us. We have a queen bed and stay on our sides. No touching. I can't sleep with anyone touching me.

Who wakes up earlier? Always me! He likes that snooze button.

Who has the bigger family? Ty

How do you spend the holidays? In our hometown with our families.

Who is more jealous? Really neither one of us gets jealous, but if I had to choose I would say Ty. I think that is just a guy thing.

Do you have little pet names for each other? The usual: babe, dear, etc... We have more nicknames for Nuts than each other. I think we need some kids... :)

How long did it take to get serious? We were as serious as possible for freshman in high school. But things really got serious when I transferred colleges to where he was.

Who eats more? Ty.

Who sings better? TY. I have an awful voice!

Who’s older? Ty by 5 months. He never lets me forget this; he thinks it makes him more mature. One day being younger will be to my advantage!

Who does the dishes? Me. Although he does help out every now and then.

Who snores? Ty. Not all the time, just every once in a while. It drives me crazy. I wake him up and make him roll over. I can't stand it.

Who’s better with the computer? Me, the person who is addicted to it.

Who drives when you are together? I usually try to get him to drive. He is constantly criticizing my driving. I don't know--I'm a great driver! hehe!

Who is the first to admit when they're wrong? Ty

Who kissed who first? He kissed me first in the back of my best friend's mom's van after a group bowling date.

Who eats more sweets? ME.

Feel free to do this questionnaire on your blog!

Crisp and Clean

I have made the first step toward my new bedroom look. I found this bedding at Dillard's on Sunday. It was exactly what I had been looking for. The embroidered design is a platinum grey color. It looks a little khaki in this stock photo from Dillard's. Can I just tell you how excited I am to have new bedding!?! I haven't had a bed skirt on our bed since we got married. We registered for bedding, but never got the bed skirt. And for some reason we never purchased it ourselves. It is amazing how much better a bed looks with a bed skirt!

I love white bedding. It looks so crisp and clean. I want to wait until I have completely finished the room before I show pictures of it. Chesley volunteered to help me paint. She is a true friend! :) Now I just need to select the perfect, calming, grey color. Easier said than done!

I have already had a talk with Nuts about the new bedding. He's not allowed on it! :)

{Does anyone else have problems remembering which gray/grey to use? I should know this because I had to learn it for a reporting class for my PR major.}

Check out these great giveaways:

Chocolate Obsession

I spent most of my weekend recovering from the event that I planned on Friday. The event went perfectly and was a success. Nuts and I enjoyed the amazing weather on Saturday and headed to the bark park. It was 71 degrees out.
After church on Sunday I met Chesley at Williams-Sonoma for one of their technique classes. It was called Chocolate Obsession. It was right up my alley. I'm a sucker for all things chocolate. I had never been to one of these before and I wasn't sure what to expect. (Don't worry I did know that they would be pushing their products!) The whole thing lasted under 30 minutes. It was much more like a demonstration than a class. But I did learn a thing or two about chocolate. But the best part was the tastings! Chocolate covered strawberries, brownies, and bouchons, oh my! Ah, the bouchons...they were amazing!
The lady poured melted white chocolate on top of them before serving. They were delish! They reminded me of the molten lava cake from Chili's. Yum, Yum! I was pretty tempted to buy the mix and the pan, but they retail for $42 together. I think I better hold off... :)
It was a fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

A little peek into Ty's life

This week has been very busy for me. I am planning a huge event on Friday for work. So my mind is very focused on that and my blogging juices are running dry. I know you have all heard me say that I started this blog for mine and Ty's families to keep up with us. I realized the other day that I probably don't talk about Ty's life much. Probably because it consists of studying, studying, and more studying. But because I talk about myself way too much and I know that a lot of Ty's family reads this blog I thought I would share a picture of what he has been up to besides studying.
A couple of Saturdays ago, the school held a suture clinic for the students. They learned how to stitch on pigs feet. Ew, gross!

(Whitney's husband just happened to be walking by when the picture was snapped.)
Ty selected all of his preferences for his 3rd year rotations a week or so ago. He will do 12 one month rotations all over the state starting in July. He should be finding out his schedule soon. He tried to select the rotations closest to our city, but I'm sure that is what most students are trying to do. So I'm sure he will have rotations where he will be at least a couple of hours away. He could end up with a couple of rotations near my grandparents and his grandparents. We will let family know his schedule once we find out and once all the switching between students has taken place.
Not sure if I will post anymore this week...wish me luck on this event! Its all been planned out so it should go well!

Penne Pesto Chicken

I tried this recipe Monday night and we had the leftovers last night. It was a yummy, light pasta. I got the recipe from SIL, Amy. I changed the type of pasta to penne instead of angel hair. I just happened to have a box of penne pasta in the back of my pantry.

Penne Pesto Chicken

Ingredients:

Penne Pasta ½ to ¾ of a box

Knorr Pesto Sauce, Package - (Not the Creamy Pesto just the regular Pesto)

1 Package Tyson Grilled Chicken Strips (Precooked)

Fresh Garlic to taste, I use about 1 teaspoon

¼ tsp Dry Basil

¼ tsp Dry Thyme

¼ tsp Dry Rosemary

½ Cup Diced Roma Tomatoes

¼ Cup Chopped Fresh Spinach

2 Tablespoons of Olive Oil

Directions:
Follow cooking directions on Knorr Pesto Sauce Package.

In a medium skillet on medium to low heat, add in the Olive Oil, Garlic, spices and chicken.

Cook together until hot and the spices have blended together with the chicken, about 5 to 10 minutes.

Follow cooking directions for the Penne Pasta.

Once pasta is ready, drained and back in the pan, add the Roma Tomatoes, Chopped Spinach and Chicken then pour the sauce over all and toss together over low heat approx 2 to 3 minutes.

This recipe serves 4 people.

Its an Addiction

My Sunday School class had a Super Bowl party last night. I signed up to bring chips. Boring, I know but I couldn't commit to a dessert at the time. But as I was making my grocery list on Saturday a craving hit for chocolate covered pretzels. Side note: Chesley and I went grocery shopping together on Saturday. I never knew what a difference it makes going grocery shopping with a friend. I left Target feeling great. It didn't even feel like grocery shopping. I couldn't find an item on my list at Target so I decided to stop somewhere else and look for it. I never do this because I just hate stopping for one item after I just spent an hour or so grocery shopping. But I didn't mind this time because I didn't even feel like I had been grocery shopping. It did help that we were at Target so we spent a lot time browsing through the clothes and home goods.

Chesley was over Saturday for dinner so I recruited her to help me make the pretzel.

These things are addicting. I only ended up taking about half of what we made to the Super Bowl party. I just couldn't stop snacking on them!

My parents and sister stopped by Friday night. They were on their way to see my new nephew, Garret. My mom cleaned out her laundry room during the days she had off from school due to the ice and found one of my great grandma's aprons. She thought I would like to have it. Of course I was excited about it. I love aprons! I'm wearing it in the above pictures.
